Biomedical Technician II

PeaceHealth is seeking a Biomedical Technician II for a 1.0 full time equivalent Non-Exempt position. This position will be working Day shift with shift durations of 8 Hours.

JOB SUMMARY

Ensure and maintain the quality, safety and performance of patient care and ancillary equipment by completing preventive and corrective maintenance, inspections and other equipment related duties as assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Responsible for equipment performance to include ensuring the safety and performance of life support, diagnostic, therapeutic and ancillary hospital equipment by verifying proper operation, performing preventive maintenance inspections and accurately completing equipment repairs as assigned.
  2. Contribute to the accurate and timely reporting of equipment maintenance history by documenting preventive maintenance inspection, repair services and other department activity as required in the computerized maintenance management system.
  3. Support and contribute to effective safety and risk management efforts by adhering to established policies and procedures. Maintain a safe environment. Actively ensure accident prevention. Identify and report potential liabilities. Maintain appropriate patient/employee confidentiality.
  4. Maintain and enhance professional skills and awareness of policies and procedures through participation in hospital, departmental and outside training/continuing education programs that are designed to facilitate personal growth and development. Contribute to effective and efficient departmental and hospital operation by assisting and providing orientation and training of staff both within the department and in other departments.
  5. Contribute to efficient financial management by effectively using time. Monitor supply and equipment usage. Make recommendations for cost containment. Make appropriate charges for services rendered and supplies used. Coordinate outside repairs.
  6. Contribute to and participate in an ongoing Quality Improvement program designed to objectively and systematically monitor and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of patient care or services provided by clinical equipment used in the medical center.
  7. Effectively communicate by interpreting and conveying information clearly, accurately and in a timely manner. Establish and maintain open, effective communication between customers and staff. Utilize correct channels of communication and recognized organization communication standard. Answer telephones in a manner that tells customers they are important. Keep abreast of, and comply with, departmental and organizational changes and events through reading posted communications and attending department and assigned meetings.
  8. Perform general duties by maintaining a working knowledge of infection control concepts, internal/external disaster plans and risk management concepts. Demonstrate knowledge of hospital, interdepartmental and unit goals, standards and operations.
  9. Actively participate in on-call duties as assigned.
  10. Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:     

  • Associate’s degree in biomedical technology or equivalent in electronics, physics or U.S. military biomedical or technical training.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in biomedical instrumentation technology preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:              

  • Minimum three years’ equipment experience (or equivalent education and/or experience).

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:            

  • Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) preferred.

 

OTHER SKILLS:  

  • Excellent analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Good oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Basic medical terminology related to equipment function.
  • Knowledge of bio-engineering, bio-electronics and instrumentation.
  • Skilled in using computers with Windows operating system.
  • Ability to navigate multiple software sites simultaneously.
  • Detailed oriented with ability to key statistical data accurately.
  • Good knowledge of schematics and ability to work independently on repairs, safety testing and preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting, operation, repair, swapping of spare equipment and obtaining vendor support as needed on Critical Care, Emergency, Family Birth Center, Surgery and Telemetry monitoring systems.

PHSW: Biomed Tech I’s successfully completing the requirements outlined in this job description shall be promoted effective the following pay period.

 

Southwest Physical/Cognitive Requirements

  • Work requires fairly light physical exertion more than 66% of the time.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 50 lbs. or less.
  • Work requires frequent exposure to conditions involving minor cold, heat, poor ventilation or sharp instruments such as syringes or lancets. Reasonably anticipated exposure to blood and body fluids once per month or more.
  • Job duties frequently require intense concentration and attention to detail (34-65% of work time).
