PeaceHealth is seeking a Coder I - Hospital Coding for a 1.0 full time equivalent Non-Exempt position. This position will be working Day shift with shift durations of 8 Hours.

JOB SUMMARY

Utilizing knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, coding software, coding conventions, local medical review policy, APC's and hospital procedures, this position is responsible for providing coding for inpatient and/or outpatient medical records with the ICD-10-CM and CPT4 coding classification systems to ensure accurate, complete and consistent coding for quality data.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Review medical record documentation and accurately code the diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT4 coding conventions for the purpose of reimbursement, research, and compliance with federal regulations.

2. Review the medical record to assure specificity of diagnoses, procedures and appropriate/optimal reimbursement for hospital and/or professional charges.

3. Abstract information form medical records following established methods and procedures.

4. Identify problem documents and work with submitting departments to correct errors.

5. Understands the basics of “authorization to release information”.

6. Responds to other departments who use coded information, verifies codes and charges assigned by other departments for accuracy.  May enter charge information when appropriate.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:     

  • Successful completion of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology courses preferred.  Successful completion of coding certificate program and/or CPC program preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:              

  • Minimum of one year directly related work experience abstracting and coding information using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding systems preferred.

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

  • RHIT (Registered Health Information Technology), RHIA (Registered Health Information Manager), CPC-H, (Certified Coding Professional Hospital), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), CPC (Certified Coding Professional) or CPCH preferred.

 

OTHER SKILLS:  

  • Proficient in windows based computer applications with respect to encoder systems, spreadsheets, word processing, databases and e-mail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form
  • Demonstrated good judgment and decision making skills
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of Medicare/Centers for Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements
  • Understands outpatient CCI & OCE edits and modifier assignment in compliance with coding guidelines.

 

SYSTEM PHYSICAL/COGNTIVE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work requires fairly light physical exertion from up to 65% of the time.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 30 lbs. or less.
  • Work is performed under normal working conditions with adequate lighting and ventilation.
  • Job duties frequently require intense concentration and attention to detail (up to 65% of work time).
