System Director Ethics

PeaceHealth is seeking a System Director Ethics for a 1.0 full time equivalent Exempt position. This position will be working Day shift with shift durations of Variable.

Directs, controls and is accountable for enhancing the awareness and integration of ethics and theology, and the ability of the system to respond ethically in clinical, organizational, social, and Catholic Church arenas across the PeaceHealth system. Develops long- and short-term business strategies, operational plans and oversees implementation.  Manages the design, structure, development and planning issues within scope of direction.  Responsible for quality, service and regulatory compliance.  Provides strategic leadership and day-to-day management for all aspects of the ethics function; serves as a trusted advisor to leaders across the organization.



  1. Works collaboratively with the system and community senior leadership teams, committees and associated professionals to identify and develop responses to clinical, organizational, and social ethics issues as well as Church related ethical issues as they impact health care.
  2. Provides leadership and guidance to the PeaceHealth system and community boards, senior leadership teams both at system and community levels system teams, and administrative caregivers, and to the system and regional ethics committees in developing and furthering ethical discernment and ethics programs at all levels of the organization.
  3. Participates in leadership development for the system by developing program models that contribute to the integration of theology and ethics as appropriate into the system projects and programs thus strengthening the PeaceHealth culture.  Participates in the Leadership in Ministry Program.
  4. Chairs the System Ethics Committee and maintain on-going relationship and structures for community ethics committees.  Provides support and counsel to associated committees and key stakeholders; review system ethics policies and procedures and make recommendations consistent with PeaceHealth Mission, Vision, Values and goals.
  5. Works with the System Institutional Review Board (IRB) to insure that research conducted in PeaceHealth is consistent with the PeaceHealth Ethics Policies.  Participates in IRB meetings (or delegate as appropriate)
  6. Collaborates with the Organizational Integrity, in bridging the common issues encountered between ethics and organizational integrity. 
  7. Works closely and collaboratively with the department leadership in setting policy and direction.
  8. Participates in the integration of organizational ethical reflection throughout PeaceHealth, including the following areas: human resources, finance, strategic planning and business development, risk management, legal, communications and advocacy.



  1. Collaborates with the key stakeholders in developing and implementing a system-wide ethics program in PeaceHealth.  Coordinate regular meetings with this group.  Provide direct supervision and evaluation of Ethics practice throughout system.
  2. Establishes and maintains relationships with external constituents in the fields of ethics and theology and encourage collaboration on critical issues.  Produces educational articles on ethics and theology for internal and external audiences.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS - Required unless otherwise stated


  • A doctorate in ethics, social ethics, moral theology, or directly related field is required.  



  • Minimum of ten years’ management experience in ethics and/or theology preferably in medical related setting.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a health care setting required.



  • Ability to deliver financial results for areas of accountability.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, communicate, and apply the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and ethical principles to medical, organizational, and social issues
  • Must have a clear understanding of and strong commitment to the health care ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace and the PeaceHealth system as reflected in the Mission and Core Values and the PeaceHealth Promise.
  • Strong human relations skills required; ability to work as a team member; administrative experience desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, extensive experience in adult learning activities, and effective public speaking abilities required.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative in developing, organizing, and presenting ethics concepts and programs.



  • Work requires fairly light physical exertion from up to 65% of the time.    
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 30 lbs. or less.          
  • Work is performed under normal working conditions with adequate lighting and ventilation.        
  • Job duties frequently require intense concentration and attention to detail (up to 65% of work time).
